​Artist Statement​

 

Inspired by the depths of the personal and collective unconscious, when painting I travel through inner and magical realms to bring back visions from across time and space. It is a conversation with the world which is alive and always communicating with us, but only if we make the effort to listen. Ethereal and haunting images emerge from layers of vivid color and texture to express subject matter both other-worldly and mysterious, providing something familiar and strange, ancient and new. Central to my work is the explicit attempt to express these magical realms in our rather mundane and secular-focused times.

Often described as figurative abstract, my style combines the tangible qualities of nature with the freedom of imagination, color, and form. It is here in this space where elusive and dream-like figures and shapes emerge onto the canvas creating dreamscapes that invite us to go beyond this physical realm. My process is an intuitive one involving a dance of deep listening, trust, of allowing to emerge onto the canvas whatever it is that needs expressing. Each painting begins with the intent to discover a dance of emotions, of experience, and of memory. The bold and vibrant colors and the deeply layered textures become a living, integral part of the images that reveal themselves.

My paintings provide a journey - an adventure - and the finished pieces are not a final ending place. They are just the beginning. Each viewer is given the chance to explore their own emotional landscapes and find solace in the beauty and complexity of life. They are invited on a path of self-discovery, to ask questions, to wonder, and to give voice to their own stories within that are awaiting expression. Perhaps in this process, they will recognize something familiar, or recollections of distant memories, where insights are gained, and the future glimpsed ~ if only for a moment.​​​​
